The Size Matters Handwriting Program (SMHP) primarily focuses on letter size to improve handwriting legibility. SMHP claims to be the most efficient way to promote printing consistency and competence. The program is concept driven rather than workbook driven, so can be implemented with little to no investment in materials. The key concepts help teens know what they’re aiming for and how to get there. The program claims that changes in legibility happen immediately and dramatically. Succeed Healthcare Solutions uses the principles of SMHP, as well as elements of Handwriting Without Tears which focuses on letter formation. For further information see Size Matters Handwriting Program and Handwriting Without Tears.
Eight key SMHP concepts:
1. Writing lines, Go and Finish Lines
2. Letter lines
3. Stop reversals with Super C
4. Touch points
5. Starting points and initial lines
6. Letter size
7. Self-monitoring and self-determination
8. Inside spacing/outside spacing.
Succeed Healthcare Solutions believes in functional intervention. Teens can bring along their homework to sessions or play some games to practice their handwriting rather than adding to their school workload.
Touch typing intervention also available.
