Do you and your young person want them to achieve independence (if possible), and ready them for possible work? This program is not for the faint hearted as this stuff takes time (can take years). But if we don't focus on it, it may never happen. We aim to helping your young person get as close to independence as they can. This includes independence from needing needing others to physically assist with tasks and independence from verbal reminders from others to do tasks. Encouraging young people to help around the home helps to teach them a 'we thinking mindset' rather than a 'me thinking mindset'. This is important as human survival is dependent on functioning as part of a group. One hour sessions, with half an hour with the young person and half an hour with the carer present.
1. First we focus on personal care (ie. showering, dressing, grooming, hygiene, feeding).
2. Second we focus on domestic activities (ie. cooking, cleaning, gardening).
3. Third we focus on community activities (ie. shopping, managing finances).
4. Fourth we focus on work readiness skills (ie. engaging in voluntary work).
These stages need to be progressed through to reach the next stage. It's not easy. But it is worth it.
